My Introduction To Selvedge. Yours Too.

Japanese selvedge fabric with enough stretch to wear every day. How one pair of Hiroshi Kato jeans changed how I think about denim - and four more brands worth knowing about.

It started with how they looked.

That deep indigo. The clean selvedge ID on the outseam. The kind of denim that has a point of view before you even try it on.

Then I tried them on.

The stretch changed everything.

Traditional raw selvedge denim has a reputation - stiff, unforgiving, a break-in period that tests your commitment before it rewards it.

The Hiroshi Kato Pen Slim Straight Stretch Selvedge sidesteps all of that.

Japanese selvedge fabric. Tightly woven, dense, the quality you can feel immediately. But with enough stretch woven in to wear like something you'd reach for every day rather than save for a special occasion.

That's a meaningful distinction.

The Pen is slim straight - the right silhouette for a clean modern look without committing to skinny. The indigo raw colorway develops its own fade pattern over time - unique to how you wear them, where you sit, how you move. That's the selvedge promise. These jeans become yours in a way that mass-produced denim never does.

Also in the Kato line worth knowing

The Hammer Straight Stretch Selvedge (shown above right) - slightly fuller through the leg for a more relaxed straight fit. Same Japanese selvedge fabric, same stretch construction, different silhouette for the reader who wants more room without losing the quality.

Also worth noting

The selvedge category has a handful of other labels doing this right - each with a distinct point of view worth knowing about.

3Sixteen Classic Tapered Selvedge - the denim purist's choice. American brand, Japanese fabric, the benchmark for selvedge done with integrity. The one serious denim heads point to first.

Buck Mason Japanese Loomstate Full Saddle Selvedge - California quality consciousness meets Japanese fabric. The Full Saddle cut offers a slightly relaxed fit through the seat and thigh - the most wearable silhouette of the group for everyday use.

RRL Straight Fit Selvedge - Ralph Lauren's vintage Americana line applied to selvedge. The most heritage-influenced of the group. Worn-in naturally, wears like a piece of American history.

Imogene + Willie/ Willie Indigo Rigid - Classic straight fit selvedge. The flagship original classic denim - signature 14 oz. rigid. The OG for sure.

Different labels. Same commitment to fabric quality.

Selvedge denim isn't a trend. It's a standard.

Once you understand the difference - everything else is just denim.
